About Expedition Sibir-2020
The idea of this expedition was determined by approaching the significant date: January 28, 2020 marks the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica by Russian sailors under the command of F. F. Bellingshausen and M. P.Lazarev. It was on the sailing ships “Vostok” and “Mirny” that in 1820 were the first to reach the sixth continent of our planet. In fact, it was the last geographical discovery of a similar scale, because after that there were no more large “white spots” on the surface of the globe.
As part of a new project, an expeditionary headquarter has been established, whose task is to develop concrete proposals in all aspects of planning, preparation and conduct of the “Siberia-Antarctic-Siberia” expedition. The dedicated web-site has been created. Active promotion of the project in mass-media, the Internet and social networks has begun.
In 2018, an application was made to the Presidential Grants Fund, and as a result, the “Siberian Sailing Expeditions” Sport Foundation became the winner in the nomination “Development of Public Diplomacy and Support for Compatriots”.
- to prepare and conduct the public events in Moscow, St. Petersburg, the Urals and Siberian Federal Districts dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica, and directed to preservation of the historical memory of the people and to development of the Russian Arctic;
- to carry out organizational and technical measures for preparation of the yacht “Siberia” for circumnavigation, to provide the expedition with necessary equipment and resources for extreme sailing and carrying out the planned activities in the ports of call ;
- to provide in the Arctic ports of call (Salekhard, Yamburg, Sabetta, Dikson, Provideniya, Pevek, Tiksi) the promotion of information about the economic potential of Siberia and Ural regions and the possibilities for further development of these regions;
- to prepare and conduct, with the assistance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, in foreign ports of call the public events dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica, for the public of host countries and our compatriots living there.
Also, during the voyage in the ports of call, a program of cultural exchanges, developed jointly with the Russian Geographical Society and the Russian Foreign Ministry, will be held. Its goal is to create a positive image of Russia in the world and to strengthen our fellow countrymen’s sense of pride in their homeland.
It will be given from the Tobolsk Gate of the Omsk Fortress. The route will go along the Irtysh and Ob rivers and the Ob gulf with stops in Tobolsk, Khanty-Mansiysk, Salekhard, Yamburg, Sabetta, Dixon. Further, “Siberia” will go through the western part of the Northern Sea Route and through the White Sea-Baltic Canal system will arrive in St. Petersburg. From there, the path of the Siberians will coincide with the route of the legendary sloops “Bellingshausen” and “Lazarev” across the Atlantic Ocean and to South America. From the extreme southern point of the American continent, the yacht will go through the Drake Strait to the Russian Antarctic station “Bellingshausen”. There the yacht should come by January 20, 2020 - the day of the 200th anniversary of the opening of the sixth continent.
The return way of “Siberia” is planned across the Pacific Ocean along the west coast of two Americas, through the Bering Strait and along the eastern part of the Northern Sea Route, with calls at the settlements of the Russian Arctic (Provideniya, Cape Schmidt, Pevek, Tiksi). In Dixon, the expedition closes the ring around the globe. She will finish in Omsk in October 2020.
This voyage should remind the world community that Russia is a country with a 1,100-year-old distinctive culture and with a prolonged historical memory of generations, and this is a country of strong people and of a great maritime power, whose sailors discovered Antarctica 200 years ago.
